The discussion about who should replace Goku has been big talk amongst Dragon Ball fans for years. There have been many options presented, from Gohan to, more recently, Uub. But what hasn’t been discussed is how. With the events of Super proving the universe of Dragon Ball is much bigger than we could have imagined; there are more possibilities to look at. Saiyan’s age significantly slower than normal humans, being considered young far into their 80s. Goku is only in his forties, so he won’t be slowing down anytime soon. He’s proven time and time again if he’s able to fight with the Z fighters, he will. With Goku’s strength continuing to grow exponentially, he will soon drastically outshine all the rest of the Z fighters, even more than he already has. So, where can Goku go from here?

With him unlocking Super Saiyan God status and Ultra Instinct – a state that even Beerus struggles to achieve, whispers began that he could become the next God of Destruction. It wouldn’t be a surprise for Goku to be able to reach God of Destruction level powers. He’s shown numerous times that he is a quick study and an extremely skilled fighter. He was able to learn Master Roshi’s Kamehameha Wave after only one demonstration and mastered every transformation or power level he’s been presented with. In chapter 25 of the manga, he even is able to use Beerus’s signature move, “Hakai,” against Zamasu. So, it seems Goku would be a prime candidate for becoming a God of Destruction – if it wasn’t for one thing.

Son Goku has always been a kind-hearted and pure soul. He doesn’t fight for destruction or to cause harm to anyone. Goku’s love of fighting has never come from a place of malice. He’s always loved fighting for the challenge of it, fighting for the sake of fighting. He wants to challenge himself to be the best fighter there is. Now that’s not to say that Goku won’t take drastic means to save innocents or loved ones if needed. He killed Frieza and Kid Buu to save the earth, to name a few. He’s even been known to befriend once enemies, namely Piccolo, Vegeta, Android 17, and 18. Simply put, Goku is too kind-hearted to become a God of Destruction. This position would be a better fitting for Vegeta.

So, where does that leave Goku? How can he get replaced if he can’t become a God of Destruction and wouldn’t give up fighting anytime soon? A God of Creation? A Cosmic Protector? Whis and Beerus already think highly of Goku’s power, and he’s proven to be able to wield the powers of the Gods. He has even been training under Whis for a while, so it wouldn’t be unrealistic to think he could become a permanent God figure in the Dragon Ball franchise. Could we possibly see a future where Goku is the God of the Creation and Vegeta, the God of Destruction, the last two pure-blood Saiyans balancing themselves and the universe? This seems like a plausible next step for our favorite Saiyans.
